More about sound transmission reduction
Sound Transmission Class (STC) is a measurement of sound reduction through a building partition which may be a wall, ceiling or floor. Outdoor Indoor Transmission Class (OITC) rates transmission loss through exterior walls. A building partition that is required to have an STC rating may be constructed with several layers of drywall, insulation and sound-dampening material, so maintaining the integrity of the wall is important. When an STC-rated wall needs to be penetrated to install a component such as an access door, tested products with an STC rating are used. Acoustic sealants are then used to fill gaps around the access door in the opening to prevent sound transmission around those elements. Testing by an independent laboratory results in an STC value providing a rough idea of how much sound that product installed in a partition may block.
